The Fiscal Follies, 2013

Three minutes – that’s how long the Senate had to approve legislation to avoid the fiscal cliff before voting 89-8 to approve the 154-page bill and budget score from the Congressional Budget Office.

According to CNS the senators received the bill at 1:36 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2013 and voted to approve it three minutes later.  The bill includes several provisions unrelated to the Congressional budget crisis, including repealing a section of ObamaCare, extending the wind-energy tax credit, and a rum tax subsidy deal for Puerto Rican rum makers.

The bill makes permanent the Bush tax cuts for individuals making less than $400,000 a year and couples making less than $450,000, and by delaying the automatic spending cuts (sequestration) from last year’s debt ceiling deal until March.

The Bush tax rates expired at midnight on Dec. 31, 2012 and the spending cuts were scheduled to take place when the government reopened following the New Year’s Day holiday.  Then, Speaker of the House John Boehner pulled the plug on $60 billion in aid for Hurricane Sandy victims in the New York-New Jersey area.  Christie blasted Boehner for pulling the money, but of course, Boehner never promised the federal aid, as far as I can tell; Obama did.

That’s what it was supposed to be about:  cutting aid and taxes.  Instead, Congress has done both.  $41 in taxes raised for every $1 cut.  That’s some deal.  You’d get better odds betting in Atlantic City where Hurricane Sandy made landfall.

The Tea Party Patriots are calling upon all members and patriotic Americans to call their Congressional representatives tonight and tomorrow morning to push for a secret ballot when they elect the Speaker of the House.  The 113th Congress will be sworn in at noon tomorrow, so you need to make as many calls as possible between now and then.

In 2010, we helped usher in one of the biggest shifts in political power in modern American history. Unfortunately, due to years and years of establishment rule making set only to protect the leadership in both parties, much of the political power that we sent to Washington was squandered by establishment types blackmailing, bullying, and bribing rank-and-file members to go along to get along.  We have seen this recently with the purging of fiscal hawks from key committee positions and we will continue to see it so long as leadership has the ability to count heads of those who simply have stronger principled conviction.

Our Representatives deserve to be able to vote their conscience without fear of retribution from leadership. Although it is getting late, call your representatives tonight and first thing in the morning to urge them to push for a secret ballot to elect the Speaker of the House. You deserve it and your Representative deserves it.  If we sheepishly crawl under our blankets, thinking there’s nothing we can do, we will be shepherded into the Age of Socialism – and bankruptcy.
