Boehner’s Balderdash

The Hill’s website headline this afternoon read, “Boehner Tells G.O.P. He’s Through Negotiating One-on-One with Obama.”

The House narrowly re-elected John Boehner as Speaker of the House for the 113th Congress after a rebellion among some fellow House Republicans fell short.  Nine Republicans defected, three didn’t vote and one voted “present” — which brought Boehner perilously close to having to go to a second ballot against Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats’ nominee. But Boehner earned 220 votes – or three more than needed to claim the speakership.

If you remember your Sixth Grade civics class lesson on Congress, the House can elect anyone to be Speaker of the House, even someone from the minority party.  How Boehner came to be the Republican nominee in the first place is the mystery to the average citizen.

The notion of having Nancy Pelosi return as the Speaker of the House is a nightmarish scenario.  No one wants to see her take up her sledge-gavel again.  As for Boehner, his saying he’s through negotiating one-on-one with Obama is like saying Bill Clinton is through chasing girls or Osama bin Laden is through sending al-Qaeda  recruits on suicide missions; Clinton’s heart problems pre-empt any further skirt chasing and bin Laden’s influence is limited to old posters of him in his youth.  In other words, it’s too late; the entitlements are already out of the gate.  The damage to our economy is already done.

He said the new Congress, like the last one, would be dominated by trying to lessen the debt burden that will be passed on to future generations. And he said that will require tough decisions by the members.  Is he kidding?  The last Congress didn’t do a very good job, by the looks of things.  We’re still $16 trillion in debt and the sinkhole is getting deeper.  Maybe if the showed the debt sinking into a hole instead of mounting up to the heavens, ignorant people might understand where we are.

“So if you have come here to see your name in lights or to pass off political victory as accomplishment, you have come to the wrong place. The door is right behind you,” he said as he took the gavel for the second Congress in a row from Mrs. Pelosi, who as minority leader by tradition hands the gavel to the speaker.

“If you have come here humbled by the opportunity to serve; if you have come here to be the determined voice of the people; if you have come here to carry the standard of leadership demanded not just by our constituents but by the times, then you have come to the right place,” he said.

“Humbled?”  “Voice of the people?”  Where he gets it really wrong is where he talks about carrying the standard of leadership demanded not just by our constituents but by the times.  Let’s see.  What are some of the hallmarks of our “times”?  A president who gambles in Las Vegas?  Who’s taken more vacation – and issued more executive orders – than any other president in U.S. history?  Who signs legislation in absentia via the Auto-Pen?

Boehner talks about the previous Congress.  You mean the one that passed legislation, some RINO, absolving the president of having to consult the Senate in order to appoint someone to an executive office?  Is that the Congress he’s talking about?  We don’t know whether Obama has auto-penned that particular document yet.  We do know Boehner was Speaker of the House at the time.

But that’s all over now.  Ancient history.  Boehner is through.  He’s done, man, baby, dude, comrade.  Obama has let Boehner down for the last time.  Yessir!  From now on, no more private meetings in the White House.  No more personal golf dates.  No more passing notes at the State of the Union address.  Everything is going to be honest and above-board.  No more of this backroom deal business.  Scout’s honor.  Cross his fingers and hope to die.  May God strike him dead if he’s lying.

From now, all legislative business will be done under the Capitol dome.  Boehner has given his word and we can take that to our bankruptcy.
