Executing the Second Amendment

Yesterday, Vice President Joe Biden announced to the press that “(t)he president is going to act” on gun violence.  Biden, directed by Obama to head a task force on gun violence, made the statement before meeting with victims of gun violence at the White House.

The administration is determined to take steps to tighten gun rules, even if that means having to work around Congress, which has blocked big gun-control bills for more than a decade, The Washington Times noted.

“There are executive orders; there’s executive action that can be taken.  We haven’t decided what that is yet.  But we’re compiling it all with the help of the Attorney General and the rest of the Cabinet members and as well as legislative action that we believe is required.”

Special and unusual legislative action would certainly be necessary to expunge the 2nd amendment to the U.S. Constitution:  “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

The Bill of Rights was a special set of amendments guaranteeing the rights of the people against the encroachment of government.  They are the only reason the U.S. Constitution was ratified; only when the individual states had a written guarantee that they would not be subsumed within a centralized, bureaucratic government, the kind of government against which they had rebelled, did they sign on the dotted line.

According to The Weekly Standard, “Biden (who helped write the Brady Bill) talked also about taking responsible action.  “As the president said, if your actions result in only saving one life, they’re worth taking. But ‘’m convinced we can affect the well-being of millions of Americans and take thousands of people out of harm’s way if we act responsibly.’

“The Founding Fathers never envisioned executive orders being used to restrict our constitutional rights,” said Rep. Jeff Duncan, South Carolina Republican told The Washington Times. “We live in a republic, not a dictatorship. The president should not be able to act unilaterally when it comes to our constitutional rights. Executive orders were meant as a way for

Biden noted that the Administration is reaching out to all groups:  pro-gun advocates, anti-gun violence groups, victims groups, and lobbyists.  Obama has sent Biden out as the sitting target duck to take the hit from groups like the NRA and Constitutional scholars, deflecting the criticism that Obama is playing fast and loose with his executive powers.

He is appealing to sportsmen to assure them that the government isn’t interested in taking away their hunting rifles.  The target is semi-automatic weapons, which is a misnomer.  Gun advocates say that “semi-automatic” is a misnomer; these are military-style weapons that are not for sale to the general public.  But machine guns do exist; the Chicago mobs used them regularly during the 1920s.  Drug dealers use them.  Terrorists use them.  And they find their way into the hands of insane people, occasionally.

‘Even if it [the executive order] saves one life,’ Biden says, it will be worth it.  What will be worth saving one life?  Destroying the Constitution?  Abandoning our Founding principles?  Taking away our only pragmatic defense against a possible tyranny?  Glenn Beck has noted that Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin outlawed guns just before they rose to power.  Resistance to their power became illegal.

To obliterate the 2nd Amendment is to pull all the teeth out of the Constitution.  To do so unilaterally, surrounded by puppet groups to support his position and give the illusion of a democratically-reached decision, is a gross abuse of power.  This is the real world, not a Hollywood movie (which itself glorifies violence) in which a complacent people yield collectively to a benevolent dictator, where the surrender of individual rights becomes a noble sacrifice, and violent resistance is unthinkable.  He’ll offer deals to get his way, but ultimately he will be dictating policy.

If Obama succeeds in dispatching the 2nd Amendment, we’ll have turned inexorably onto the path of tyranny.
