Christie’s Mug Shot

People who pose for Time magazine get what they deserve.  Just saw the Time magazine cover with N.J. Gov. Chris Christie staring bleakly out from the page.  Dressed in a wide pinstriped suit, to denote that New Jersey gangster look, a bare light shines down on him from above, like your typical 1940’s interrogation light-bulb, washing out his features.

Nothing can wash out his jowls, unfortunately, and having face the camera head on is the surest way to highlight them.  He stares unsmiling at the camera, expressionless and grim.  Almost certainly, that is what the photographer ordered him to do.  The picture is designed to be more mug shot than portrait, more driver’s license photo than artwork.

I could have done a better job in my makeshift photo studio at my last job than Time magazine’s photographer did.  It was not incompetence, though; it was pure, editorial malice.

The next time the Governor wants to have his picture taken badly, he can save a lot of time by just going to the local DMV office.
