Put Your Hand in the Hand

The events of this past week – the DHS declaring Bible-quoters a terrorist threat to the nation, the ongoing battle over the Second Amendment (don’t forget New Jersey residents about the We the People rally in your county this weekend.  The rally for Passaic County is at Veterans Alliance Park in Wayne on SUNDAY, April 14, at 2 p.m.) and the way in which Obama ruthlessly invokes the memories of the children of Sandy Hook E.S. to garner support for a total ban on guns, the advent of the Communist-oriented Common Core tests, and Aunt Elsa’s funeral – have made me wax nostalgic for the good old days of 1971.

Aunt Elsa’s daughter had the mourners sing some hymns most ordinary worshippers had never heard before.  My favorite is a reasonably modern gospel hymn, “Put Your Hand in the Hand.”  Written by Canadian singer-songwriter Gene MacLellan, the song was first recorded by Anne Murray.  However it was the Canadian band Ocean that put the song at the top of the charts, ranking No. 2 on Billboard’s ratings in 1971.  Imagine, a song about Jesus becoming a hit a mere nine years after the Supreme Court banned prayer in schools (the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional around 1964).

This is for all the poor children of the Sandy Hook school, who are still being mourned, and for the government that thinks they hold the ultimate power.  Granted, the first thing you should do, if you can, when you see a deranged gunman is run for safety or hide.  But if you can’t….

Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the waters

Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea.

Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently

By putting your hand in the hand of the man from Gallilee.

Every time I look into the Holy Book I start to tremble

When I read about the part where the carpenter cleared the temple.

For the buyers and the sellers were no different fellers than we profess to be.

But he came to Earth to help us be the people we should be.

Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the waters.

Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea.

Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently.

By putting your hand in the hand of the man from Gallilee.

My mama taught me how to pray before I reached the age of seven.

She said, “Honey, if you ever need help, just kneel down and pray to heaven.

For the mothers and the fathers have no greater powers and may not always be

Nearer than the Shepherd who caused the blind to see.”

Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the waters.

Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea.

Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently.

By putting your hand in the hand of the man from Gallilee.
