Without Prejudice

According to Fox News, the Justice Department, under pressure from the NAACP, has agreed to investigate George Zimmerman over possible civil rights violations.  But FBI documents show that, so far, agents have found no evidence of racial bias despite dozens of interviews.

“Sanford police detective Chris Serino told FBI agents last year that after examining the case, it appeared Zimmerman was suspicious of Martin because of his “attire, the total circumstances of the encounter and the previous burglary suspects in the community.”

According to the document, Serino considered Zimmerman as having “a little hero complex, but not as a racist.”

Serino told the FBI that there had been several burglaries in the area, and that gang members in the community “typically dressed in black and wore hoodies.”

“When Zimmerman saw Martin in a hoody, Zimmerman took it upon himself to view Martin as acting suspicious,” Serino said, while describing Zimmerman as “overzealous.” The FBI document was posted on the Smoking Gun website.

Meanwhile, Mark O’Mara, who defended Zimmerman at trial, suggested his client’s safety was at risk. “There still is a fringe element that wants revenge,” O’Mara said. “They won’t listen to a verdict of not guilty.”

In August 2012, O’Mara said Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had been living like hermits and weren’t working because they feared for their safety.

Perhaps if the Sanford Police had been a little more “overzealous” in their duty to protect the Twin Lakes section of Sanford, the burglaries and Martin’s death would not have happened.  Martin’s backpack full of women’s jewelry and a burglary tool don’t speak well for Martin, though we’re not supposed to speak ill of the dead.

Zimmerman’s instincts may have been correct.  According to the testimony of numerous witnesses, the burglaries began about the time Martin was expelled from the Miami-Dade school system and came to live with his father in Sanford.  Other witnesses claim that the prime suspect was a black teenager who lived in the community.  In nearly all-white Twin Lakes, that pretty well narrows down the suspects.

They say character shouldn’t matter.  No, it’s color that shouldn’t matter.  Character matters plenty when you’re talking about a young, white Hispanic man who is trying to protect his community after a series of burglaries and a young, black man with knapsack full of jewelry, as it turns out.

Martin wasn’t doing anything wrong that night.  As far as anyone knows or can tell.  Except that police testimony indicates that Zimmerman observed Martin looking in the cars of windows.  He most certainly deserved to be profiled.  Are we to simply stand back and say nothing as thugs (with traces of pot in their systems) roam our neighborhoods and burglarize at will?  The police only show up in these cases when it’s too late.  Let the insurance company take care of it.  What kind of answer is that?  Because if we don’t, and the criminal is caught and thrown in jail, or turns on a neighborhood crime-watcher, pummels his head into the ground, forcing the crime-watcher to defend himself (in Florida, you’re allowed to do so, but not in other states) and kill his assailant, the black and Hispanic communities will riot?  Black preachers set their young constituents the example by wearing hoodies?  Our black Attorney General insists on bringing about a civil rights case against Zimmerman because the jury (rightly) acquitted him?

Martin was doing nothing wrong?  Actually, he did as soon as he punched George Zimmerman and slammed his head on the sidewalk.  Zimmerman was walking away at that point.  It’s called assault.  Zimmerman defended himself, Martin is dead, and blacks are rioting in the streets of our largest cities, notably New York and Los Angeles, thousands of miles from Sanford.

The mobs say they want justice.  Justice was done, although since it was a case of self-defense, it never should have come to court.  The case was brought to trial to appease the mobs.  Now that the jury’s verdict is known, the mobs are still clamoring for “justice.”  They’ve threatened Zimmerman’s life; they’ve held violent protests in New York, Los Angeles, and Oakland, Calif. (across the bay from San Francisco – think “Newark”).  There were protests in Newark as well.

Martin fit the description of the recent burglars.  The Sanford police accuse Zimmerman of having something of a “hero” complex.  Glad to hear someone does.  At least he took a stand, and when it looked like it was getting ugly, it turns out he walked away.  Martin pulled the first punch, the jury decided, and Zimmerman defended himself, with deadly force.

It’s unfortunate that Martin took the path in life that he did.  Everyone keeps talking about what Zimmerman should have done differently (i.e., not followed Martin).  Well, maybe if Martin had stayed away from drugs, studied how to use a compass to solve complex math problems instead of how to use a flathead screw driver to break into windows, if he tried growing up instead of growing pot, maybe he’d still be living with his mother, still going to school, and doing whatever teenagers who want to live do.  In short, if he’d just stayed out of trouble, at least he’d still be living.
